Craftsman Professional Lawn Tractor 26 HP 50" Electric Start PYT9000 - Craftsman mower model 917.20381

I own a Craftsman mower, as described above. My issue has to do with the system used to raise and lower the mowing deck. It has a metal wire which runs over a plastic spindle. I have had to replace the spindle and wire, plus carry it to a local repair person numerous times when the wire run off the grooves in the spindle. It is very hard to access the nuts underneath to take the spindle and wire off. The plastic spindle also cracks or chips when the deck gets in a bind and the wire brushes over it. The wire has come off twice in the last month, and it is quite costly to keep going to the repair shop. I looked at some new models like mine recently and noticed the deck lifting system was much stronger. Any suggestions to help my frustrations? My mower is about 5 years old with about 215 hours. It still runs and cuts great.
