Defective Kenmore Range - kenmore range

To Sears /Kenmore:

I own a Kenmore range, Model No. 790-9641340E, Serial No. VF84335671, which I purchased on 11/08/08.

Late on Monday, March 2, 2015, about 5 minutes after removing a pan of roasted vegetables from the oven, I was washing dishes in my kitchen. Suddenly I heard a crackling sound, then a loud crash. I turned around [in my galley-style kitchen] to find the outer oven glass door had shattered. I kept hearing a crackling sound for the next 15-25 minutes, and wasn’t sure if it was due to the cooling down of the oven interior [I'd turned it off after removing the roasted vegetables], or the force of gravity on the pieces of glass still stuck to the oven door frame.

Thankfully, I did not suffer any cuts by the exploding glass even though I was approx. 18" away from the oven when the crash occurred. And, thankfully I was able to keep my cat away from the kitchen; she would have most definitely suffered cuts to her paws otherwise due to all the glass on the kitchen floor.

In my 35+ years of living alone, cooking and using ovens in various domiciles, NEVER have I had an oven's glass explode. In the past few days, I have searched this problem online and see where many other consumers have encountered the same problem.

I have never before owned a Kenmore range prior to this purchase; I will never buy another one.

Why does Sears/Kenmore install sub-standard glass into its ovens?

Since 3/2/15, I've read that using the self-cleaning oven feature can cause exploding glass; I have self-cleaned my oven only once, and most definitely no more than twice, since purchasing it. I do not slam the oven door when closing it. I do not hit or bang things against it. I live alone, so no one else has used my oven. In other words, I have not been negligent in its use.

Now, I have to incur a costly repair, and have been unduly caused to be extremely scared by the incident and fearful of using my oven, as well as inconvenienced.

I reluctantly ordered replacement glass from Sears. When initialling calling Sears, the customer service representative was rude and defensive. It was as if he wanted to pick a fight.

Instead, I ordered the replacement glass online rather than continue to speak to him.

Sears guarantees its tools; it should do the same with exploding glass on its ovens!!
